Comparative: Dainese Sandstorm Gore-Tex vs. Alpinestars Valparaiso 2 Drystar

Comparisons and rankings 18 November, 2015

We compare...

The Dainese Sandstorm Gore-Tex and the Alpinestars Valparaiso 2 Drystar are two jackets featuring waterproof and thermal layers, which are removable. These two jackets are new Touring collection for 2016 and feature a similar structure, offering three jackets in one.

Construction and materials

The Dainese Sandstorm Gore-Tex has been made with Duratex textile with Mugello inserts, a high resistance material against wear placed in back and elbows. Inside this material we will find a Gore-Tex layer and a thermal inner.

On the other hand, we find the Alpinestars Valparaiso 2 Drystar, a jacket which features a multi-material with great resistance to the wear on its external side. On the inside, we find a waterproof layer, called Drystar and a thermal inner.

If we compare Gore-Tex and Drystar materials, we can conclude that the Gore-Tex is more tecnical against the water and breathability, but its price is higher. Both linings offer good protection against standard rain and snow, but in case of doing long routes and journeys under the rain, with Gore-Tex we will be plenty satisfied.

The jackets lining will offer many options. The Dainese thermal layer is made with textile and can convert in a useful urban jacket when we get off the bike. The Alpinestars offers the chance of wearing both internal layers (the waterproof and the thermal one), also when we get off the bike.

Both jackets have internal layers we can use on and off the motorbike. In the photo, the Alpinestars Valparaiso 2 Drystar.

Both jackets have protections in shoulders and elbows and are prepared for including chest and back protectors if we want. These protectors are not included in the jackets as standard.

Both the Dainese and Alpinestars feature similar solutions regarding internal ventilation. Thanks to zipper and velcro closures, we can regulate air intakes placed in the chest. The difference is that the Valparaiso 2 has addition air intakes in the sleeves. As air exits we find two zippers placed in the back on both jackets.

Pockets, adjustments and closures

We find waterproof external pockets on both jackets (the Dainese has a zip and buttons as closure system, while the Alpinestars has a Velcro and buttons system). We also find pockets in the linings of both jackets.

The main closure of both the Dainese and Alpinestars jackets is a zipper. For an optimal fit there are strips and velcro adjustments on both jackets placed in the neck, sleeves and waist.

The structure of both jackets is very similar and the linings combination of the Alpinestars and Dainese jackets offers us the chance of wearing them during all the year round.
