Review: Alpinestars Celer, the sporty jacket with thermal inner

Reviews and tests 7 September, 2015

We analyze...

The Alpinestars Celer jacket offers sporty and aggressive lines combined with very tough leather with ergonomic stretch panels and thermal lining, which ensure us a sports jacket for all seasons.

Materials and structure
The main structure of the Alpinestars Celer is formed by extremely durable 1.3mm thick bovine leather, with a high value of resistance to abrasion. Combined eith the leather there’re elastic aramid panels in the back, waist and elbows, which offer flexibility without sacrificing the sporty look.
Padded reinforcements,
microperforations and elastic panels: three elements featured along the leather.
There’re also generous elastic panel inserts in the shoulder blades zone that significantly improve the flexibility of the arms. The same type of panel is found in the top of the elbow.
The Celer share features of other models from the Alpienstars sporty jacket range, as an aerodynamic hump seen in the Atem and the GP Pro. But the big difference is inside: the Celer is the only one in the entire range with inner thermal lining. The thermal liner increases its use, allowing us to wear it in spring/autumn and winter seasons. This liner is removable thanks to two red-coloured side zippers and a Velcro closure. If we remove the layer, we can find a microperforated high ventilationfabric as the main inner material.
The inner lining is totally removible.
The Alpinestars Celer comes to us in an updated 2015 version. The main differences are in the distribution of padded reinforcements in the back and the abdomen. In addition, there are some strategic points more cushioning presence increases the thickness and therefore the abrasion resistance.
There are also numerous reinforcements born from Alpinestars racing expertise, like the dual density TPU shoulders and elbows protectors, both with the brand logo.
TPU protectors and reflective strips (left) and the aerodynamic hump (right).
We can complement these elements with additional Alpinestars level 2 back and chest protectors, such as the Bionic Air or Nucleon, thanks to the dedicated pockets in both back and chest. These accessories are not included with the Celer.
The Alpinestars Celer incorporateswhat Aplinestars call ‘Dynamic Flow Control’ system, which consists of zipped air intakes, ensuring possibility of regulating air flow, but overall, the air inlets provide less ventilation than other summer sports jackets, as the GP Pro or Atem. Air extraction occurs in the lower back area.

Improving the overall ventilation, we found small microperforated zones distributed on the leathers’ chest, back and arms.
Settings and closures
The main zipper is topped by a Velcro clasp at the top. We found zippers for adjusting sleeves too and generous Velcro strips on jacket sides with the aim of fitting the jacket perfectly. The sleeves have neoprene finishing in the edge, which prevents the entry of water and improve the feel in that area. The Celer has pants connecting zip.
Regarding pockets: we found two zipped outside, two inner with Velcro closure and another on the side, between the liner and the main padding. The latter is zippered and waterproofed, which will be really useful for storing wallet, mobile or documentation. And if we use the winter lining, there’s also two other velcro pockets. This way we have the same number of pockets no matter if we choose to use the winter lining or not.
Inner waterproof pocket (top left), inner pockets (down left) and thermal lining zippers (right).
Finally, we find other details like three reflective strips to improve our visibility but aesthetically not highlighted, helping to maintain a sober looking jacket line.
Thanks to its design and interior thermal lining, the Alpinestars puts the Celer in the winter and half season jacket segment but also will perform well in summer if you want to protection provided by leather in the warmer months.
