Review: Leatt Fusion 3.0 Neck Brace Vest, integral safety for MX

Reviews and tests 14 December, 2014

We analyze...

Leatt presents their first neck protector with integrated vest for adults, a great step forward in the conception of off-road protection. Four protections in one: chest, back, shoulders and neck brace in one integrated system for easier use and function together.

What is a Neck Brace Vest?

Until now, the chest protections available for off-road riders were separate to the neck brace, a more recent device in safety gear. The neck brace vest is a new concept that joins the chest, shoulder and back protection to the neck brace, such that they form a single entity. Therefore, it’s a concept that seeks to integrate all the torso safety elements into a single piece.

This “skeleton” provides integral protection for the MX rider, as well as being much easier to put on and take off. Therefore, as users, we’ll have all the different safety elements grouped together, which means less headaches when purchasing all the different protections and also time saving when putting the gear on.

We must bear in mind that the philosophy of the Leatt Fusion 3.0 is to make the use of protections for practising MX as easy as possible, as well as strengthening the integral safety of the rider.

The neck brace is made of polyamide (a type of polymer) reinforced with fibreglass. The vest has level 1 EN 1621 homologation for the chest area as well as the back. We must highlight that the Fusion 3.0 has a side band that provides greater protection in this area.

Fasteners and adjustments

The Leatt Fusion 3.0 has been designed with 3D technology in order to create an item with a perfect fit. Important aspects have been taken into account in its conception, such as not weakening the chest area, which is why we access the Leatt Fusion via the side: in the neck brace there are two points of union which form a bridge between he front and back protection. There we find two push buttons that are adjusted with a simple ‘click’ to open/close the entire skeleton, functioning exactly like the traditional neck braces. In this way, the neck brace is divided into two halves via the flanks, without affecting the structural rigidity of the unit and without compromising the safety of the chest and back.

Now we adjust the neck brace with the two side arms, which have elastic straps with a plastic buckle that are adjusted on the front flank. Finally, adjust the shoulder protection with the elastic straps with Velcro fasteners and the integral protection system is closed and without the need for tools.  The neck brace is not removable, such that the Leatt Fusion 3.0 cannot be used with just the chest protection.

One detail, once we gear up with the Leatt Fusion 3.0, the best way to put on our MX gear is with the vest on top of the jersey. However, the Fusion 3.0 can also be used with the jersey covering part of the protector, leaving the rear part of the neck brace uncovered. For this, we must have a MX jersey that is loose and flexible, especially in the neck area.

At first glance, the Leatt Fusion 3.0 seems rigid, but the truth is that the unit has remarkable flexibility even though it is of hard plastic. The chest and rear mobility is achieved thanks to the ‘Pivot Point’ system: the point of union between the chest and abdominal protector is joined by an internal, multidirectional pivot which allows both pieces to rotate to the right as well as to the left, affording a mobility plus to the rider.

The shoulder guards are joined to the skeleton via straps originating from the neck brace, such that their radius of movement is independent of the vest and neck brace. These pieces are detachable. As regards the neck brace, it incorporates all the features of a latest generation neck brace: integral protection for the rider’s neck and optimum feel in the areas with more contact with the protection. Its shape has been designed to provide maximum mobility to the neck, without sacrificing safety.

The chest and back protections have injected foam filling in the areas resting against our body. The interior of the shoulder guards are covered in a 3D acrylic fabric.

Leatt is aware that an off-road product needs great ventilation. The Fusion 3.0 is no exception and has inserts to facilitate air flow throughout the system, the outer shell as well as the inner padding.

Other details

The Leatt Fusion 3.0 is available in white and in black with sizes S/M, L/XL and XXL.
