How to tell if a motorcycle helmet is of good quality?

We advise you about...

Knowing how to choose a motorcycle helmet is crucial as our safety is at stake. But as we always say; our comfort is also in play.

Apart from knowing how to choose the right size of motorcycle helmet, there are many other questions that, if you’re new to the two wheel world, might come to mind. For example, how to tell if a motorcycle helmet is of good quality?

Known brands on the market

As we explain in the guide for how to choose a motorcycle helmet, the first thing you have to do is analyse your needs and to answer various questions: what type of motorcycle do I have? Do I use it every day? What use do I give it? Do I use motorways a lot? Etc.

A jet motorcycle helmet for riding a high speeds on the motorway might not be the best option. Nor a modular helmet for motocross neither.

The second tip is quite basic: you have more possibilities that a motorcycle helmet is good if it’s from a known brand. In the motorcycle helmet sector they invest a lot of recourses and time on researching how to make them safer. A helmet from a brand with experience in the sector will be more reliable than one from a brand we’ve never heard of.

What is the best material for motorcycle helmets?

Like everything in life, the subject of the helmet brand has nuances. The main brands of the sector usually have a large catalogue. Are all the motorcycle helmets they sell good?

If they’ve passed the relevant certification, then yes. That is; you can ride with them legally. But, we should analyse the material that the helmet and its shell (the more visible outer part) is made of.

A fibre motorcycle helmet, (albeit glass or carbon fibre), will always be more resistant to impacts than a thermoplastic resin motorcycle helmet.

Similarly, a full face helmet will be safer than a jet helmet as this one doesn’t cover our face.

Is it correctly certified and homologated?

We mentioned this a moment ago and we’ve also spoken about it several times at Motocard, in the blog as well as on our YouTube channel: you must ensure that the motorcycle helmet fulfils the current normative for your country. For example, in Europe it should have ECE 22.05 homologation and in the United States, DOT homologation. At Motocard all the helmets we sell are homologated.

To know this, you should find a label with the information inside the helmet, on the closure or on the rear. In our web you can find the helmet’s homologation at the end of the product description.

Accessories and finishes

If you’re still asking yourself how to tell whether a motorcycle helmet is good, another aspect to bear in mind are the finishes and the accessories included. Just like the car market: you have the same car model but with different finishes: the upholstery, colour, extras, etc.

It’s much the same for helmets: the carbon finish will have a slightly higher price than one that doesn’t have this.

Similarly, there are two types of closures: micrometric and double ring. The latter is the most secure and the only one allowed on the track.

We hope that with these tips you’ve learnt how to tell whether a motorcycle helmet is good, or not.
