To explain what a motorcycle helmet is like inside, first we have to talk about the main parts of the helmet. But, this all depends on the type of helmet, be it jet, modular or full face.

What’s a helmet like. Parts

One of the most important parts of a helmet, and the most recognisable is the outer shell. This is a fine layer that, as we’ve been saying at Motocard, can be made of various materials: thermoplastic, fiberglass, tricomposite (where carbon fibre, fibreglass and aramid are mixed) and finally, carbon fibre as the main material.

So we have two main groups: those made of thermoplastic and those made of fibre. The manufacturing processes are usually similar: generally a mould is used according to the size of the shell.

Inner shell or EPS

Often at Motocard we refer to the EPS, to the inner shell. EPS arises because it’s the most used material: advanced polystyrene, and usually integrates various layers and different densities to obtain greater impact resistance and absorption.

In the EPS we find the ventilation ducts for the air inlets and outlets which will allow for airflow inside the helmet to combat the heat.

Generally, the air inlets are usually adjustable, except in the top of the range track helmets, which seek maximum airflow. The ventilation system is usually composed of front or upper air inlets and extractors on the rear that allow the air to circulate, which we appreciate on warmer days.

The screen of a motorcycle helmet

Let’s talk about the screen. This is what protects our eyes against inclemencies, insects, UV rays, etc. There are various types depending on the type of helmet and the manufacturer, but generally they are made of polycarbonate.

What’s important about this basic part of the helmet is that it has protection against ultra violet rays, anti-scratch treatment and a removal system that is tool less. Also, bear in mind whether or not you can install an anti-fog sheet to avoid misting up. In some cases we can have an inner sun visor.

Interior padding of a motorcycle helmet

If we turn the helmet and look inside, we find the padding or foam. The inner padding. This are designed to offer maximum comfort and fit as they are usually made of breathable materials, which help wick sweat. Also, they are usually made without seams so that they are more comfortable.

What’s important about this part is that the padding be removable for washing and that they have an emergency removal system.

Closure of a motorcycle helmet

All the parts of the motorcycle helmet come together in the strap’s closure. This may be of two types: double buckle, the only one allowed on the track and the safer one, and the micrometric, a much more comfortable and quick to operate closure.

Take into account that a helmet also requires periodical maintenance in order for all the parts to do their job and to fulfil the safety requirements. Likewise, from Motocard we always remind you that every 5 or 6 years you should renew your helmet as the materials gradually lose their properties.
