We advise you about...
We tell your some recomendations to buy a leather motorcycle jacket: features, protections and other things to keep in mind. What's your choice?
Bomber jacket, cape, dust cover….call it what you like; but it’s a leather motorcycle jacket, the most emblematic garment that has always identified us as bikers. But, you must ensure that it’s safe, practical and of quality. And that is why we are presenting a guide of what to bear in mind when choosing a leather motorcycle jacket.
At Motocard we have hundreds of different jackets. I’m not exaggerating: we have around 350 different ones. How to choose amongst so much variety? Well, we’re going to classify them according to some features such as the ventilation or the linings and membranes. Let’s go step by step.
Sports leather motorcycle jacket
By antonomasia, the leather jacket is usually sports. What should it have? Well, safety elements, premium exterior leather, internal shoulder and elbow protections and predisposition for including a back protector.
Also a corseted fit, very sporty, but with elastic inserts that allow us to move our arms in sports riding. And, finally, details such as a zip connecting to the pants and, in the more sporting ones, even an aerodynamic hump.
As an example of all these features, there’s the Alpinestars Missile Ignition. As its name suggests, it’s a rocket: as if they sawed a race suit in half. 1.3 mm thick cowhide, very abrasion resistant, sliders on the elbows and shoulders to reinforce the protections, stretch areas to improve the flexibility of the leather, and, check this out, compatibility for installing the Alpinestars Tech-Air airbag.
Summer leather motorcycle jacket or with a lining for winter
But within the leather sports jackets there are also some models with variations. This is mainly for the climate: when it’s very hot or very cold, the leather jacket is not so practical. Therefore there are special models to avoid this.
For example, the Dainese Racing 3 is also available in an Estiva version, i.e., one for the summer. What’s special about it? All the leather is microperforated, such that we gain in ventilation without losing safety.
At the other end we have the Alpinestars Jaws V3. With a thermal inner lining to insulate us against the cold and I can assure you that in winter you’ll notice it, and how! The lining is the difference between wearing a leather jacket or opting for a different textile one. Also, the thermal lining of the Jaws V3 is removable, such that when the cold ends, just remove it and you have a jacket for the rest of the year.
Women’s leather motorcycle jacket
By the way, the Jaws V3 you’re seeing is the Lady version. The sizing, the shape, the tailoring of the jacket all change a bit to better fit the female form.
More and more manufacturers are making specific models of jackets, pants and other garments for women. We want more female bikers so that we can have even more variety and so that you can have more and more choice. More female bikers please!
Vintage bomber motorcycle jacket
Having seen all this, someone will say “but where’s that eternal leather bomber jacket, the black, bad boy one’” Well calm down, if you don’t want to look like a racer, there are now a wide variety of “vintage” or café racer or custom style jackets.
With the aesthetics of yesteryear and today’s technology: check the internal elbow and shoulder protections it has; although they don’t have external reinforcements, inside they do. And that there’s a space for inserting the back protector.
For example, this handsome Segura Mortymer has everything I’ve mentioned. Also it’s practical, as it has a removable thermal lining. The fit is different in these jackets; they’re not worn so tight and don’t need such flexible areas as they already allow us to move more freely.
Finally, the little details make things great. For example, the reflective inserts for making us more visible. Or the neoprene finishes in the collar. Important that you look for this to avoid chaffing in the neck, which irritates the skin and is a real nuisance.
Conclusion
So you see, these are the tricks for choosing the best leather bomber jacket. Just remember that in Motocard.com you’ll find the size guide for each model (just below the price) and consult our video on how to choose the size of your motorcycle jacket.
